Slow Aging

Changing the balance of oils in the diet by taking enough omega-3 fatty acid supplements may slow a key biological process linked to aging.

A recent study determined that most overweight but healthy middle-aged and older adults who took omega-3 supplements for four months saw preservation of DNA segments in their white blood cells. The segments, called telomeres, are known to shorten over time as a consequence of aging.

Omega-3 supplementation also reduced oxidative stress, which is caused by excessive free radicals in the blood.

Based on these antiaging findings, researchers said omega-3 supplements could reduce the risks for many diseases associated with aging, including heart disease, Type 2 diabetes, arthritis, and Alzheimer’s.
