You may think you’re eating healthy, but it pays to scrutinize food labels. The amount of sugar being added to so-called “natural, healthy” foods may shock you.

Sugar has many different aliases. If a couple of the following ingredients are listed high on a food label, you can bet the food or beverage is high in added sugars. The following is only a partial list.

  1. Barley malt
  2. Brown sugar
  3. Cane juice crystals
  4. Caramel
  5. Carob syrup
  6. Corn sweetener
  7. Corn syrup
  8. Date sugar
  9. Dextrose
  10. Fructose
  11. Fruit juice concentrate
  12. Glucose

  13. High-fructose corn syrup
  14. Honey
  15. Invert sugar
  16. Lactose
  17. Malt syrup
  18. Maltodextrin
  19. Molasses
  20. Rice syrup
  21. Sorbitol
  22. Turbinado sugar
