Folate for Asthma

One common symptom, “wheezing can be serious,” says Howard Eigen, MD, at the Indiana University School of Medicine.

In children, wheezing often occurs after exercise, making kids and their parents less likely to encourage vigorous activity.

A study of over 8,000 youngsters in the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology links low levels of the B vitamin folate with higher incidences of wheezing and allergy markers. Also known as folic acid, folate is available in asparagus, barley, beef, brewer’s yeast, brown rice, cheese, chicken, dates, leafy greens, legumes, milk, mushrooms, oranges, root vegetables, salmon, tuna, wheat germ, and whole grains.

Or look for this B vitamin, which is a brain food and important in preventing certain birth defects, in a balanced B complex in a daily multivitamin/mineral.
